What Is an Ad Creative?

An ad creative is the actual image, video or text asset a viewer sees when an ad runs — the finished file, not the campaign strategy sitting above it.

In practice

Every ad, on every platform, is built from at least one ad creative. A single Meta advertising campaign might run three or four ad creatives against the same audience to see which hook performs; a TikTok ad set might rotate five ad creatives in a week. Budget, targeting and schedule sit above the ad creative in a campaign's structure and don't change what a viewer actually sees — only the ad creative does that.

An ad creative can be a static image, a short video, a carousel of several images, or text paired with a headline. What separates it from an ordinary image is intent: it was built to run as paid advertising, sized for a specific placement, and paired with a call to action. Two ad creatives can advertise the exact same offer and still perform very differently depending on the hook, the framing and the first line of copy. That framing is also why advertising teams keep several ad creatives running side by side instead of publishing just one.

Example

A 4:5 image showing a product on a kitchen counter, headline "One board, every meal," and a Shop Now button is one ad creative. Run the same offer again at 9:16 for a Story placement and it becomes a second ad creative — same product, same offer, different file. Both are still one ad each, not two separate campaigns. See how that second render actually works in the ecommerce product ads playbook.

How this relates to ad research

Tools like the Meta ad library and the Google Ads Transparency Center exist to research other advertisers' ad creatives — what ran, for how long, on which placement. AdLibrary.net answers a different question: instead of researching an archive full of someone else's ad creatives, it generates new ones from a text prompt, free and ready to run. Both approaches sit under the same umbrella of advertising research, even though this glossary's advertising angle is generation, not archiving; they just answer "what ran" versus "what should I run."
